Autoantibodies against P ribosomal proteins have been associated with lupus psychosis, but the mechanisms remain unknown. We identified a novel neuronal surface protein that is recognized by anti-P antibodies and also found that anti-P antibodies elicit calcium entry into neurons and trigger neuronal apoptosis. We are exploring the neuronal function of this novel anti-P target and the behavioral effects of anti-P antibodies.
